OUR BELIEFS & VALUES
What We Believe
Our Focus - Jesus
Our first focus is always sharing the love of Jesus! A personal relationship with Jesus Christ is the most important thing we want people to experience. God’s Word clearly shows that Jesus is God’s Son, who left heaven to come to earth. He lived a perfect life, died on the cross, and rose from the grave for us. Matthew 22:37 gives us the perfect response to his sacrifice. We are to love him with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength.
Loving Others
Because we love Jesus, we want to share His love with others. We have been part of Buncombe County and Asheville since 1929. As a church, we want to love the people in our community and beyond. We are committed to helping others grow in a relationship with God, the Bible, and the church.
Our Foundation
SBC DENOMINATION
West Asheville Baptist is a Southern Baptist Church. As a Southern Baptist Church, we subscribe to the Baptism Faith and Message 2000 as our key foundational doctrine.
GOD
There is only one God. He exists in three persons – God the Father, God the Son (Jesus), and the Holy Spirit. He is all-powerful, all-knowing, loving, and desires a relationship with you. Genesis 1:1, 26,27 & 3:33, Psalm 90:2.
JESUS
THE HOLY SPIRIT
We believe that God the Holy Spirit lives in every Christian believer. We believe that He is active in convincing unbelievers of their need for salvation in Jesus Christ. He lives in every Christian once they accept Christ as Savior. He provides all Christians with guidance and helps them to understand spiritual truths.
2 Corinthians 3:17, John 16:7-13, Acts 1:8
THE BIBLE
The Bible is the definitive word of God. It is true and without error. It is God’s love letter to His people, written by men under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. The Bible is our only source of truth and instruction for life as Christians.
ETERNAL LIFE
Salvation is a free eternal gift available to everyone. We can never be good enough to earn it by doing good things or our kindness to others. It is a grace gift that can only be received by admitting sin, turning away from it, and putting your faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.
John 3:16; Romans 6:23; Ephesians 2:8-9; John 14:6; Titus 3:5; Galatians 3:26; 1 John 2:25 & 5:11-13; Revelation 20:15
SALVATION
Because Jesus gave his life for us, He promises us eternal life with him when we accept him as our Savior. That promise is eternal and cannot be lost. It is a gift of grace through Jesus and cannot be earned.
John 10:27-30, Ephesians 1:13
BAPTISM
Christian baptism symbolizes the believer’s faith in a crucified, buried, and risen Savior. We believe that Baptism of the believer by water immersion is the example set by Jesus.
Matthew 3:13-17; 26:26-30; 28:19-20; Mark 1:9-11
